Tygerberg Hospital Childrens Trust

The Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust, established in 2001 with Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and Mrs. Leah Tutu as the patrons, is a registered Non-Profit Organisation and Section 18A Public Benefit Organisation. The sole objective of the trust is to improve service delivery at Tygerberg Hospital for its child patients. Our work is focused through Four Funding Baskets, namely: • Neonatology • General Paediatrics • Specialised Care • Social Development Since we are not a children’s hospital, but instead a very large paediatric unit within a state hospital, we look at the patient experience quite holistically. This means we look at the ecosystem around the child including the mother, families, the medical professionals, education and social aspects, which is reflected in the four project areas of our work: • Child and family-centred care • Equipment, technology and infrastructural upgrades • Education, leadership and training • Research and development The Trust relies on fundraising campaigns such as community donations, virtual events, virtual campaigns, basic sponsorships, premier sponsorships, membership programmes, grants and social enterprise to fulfil its mandate. Fundraising campaigns are supported by the founding members of our Tutu Tygers Club viz. Vernon Philander, Ashley Johnson, Juan de Jongh and Cornal Hendricks who have each attained world stardom in their sporting careers. The Tutu Tygers have taken on the challenge laid down by Arch Tutu and his Nobel Peace Prize Laureates to change the paradigm of poverty and its influence on childhood health and wellbeing. The work carried out by the Trust is also supported by a growing number of Champions For Children Volunteers, which has a current registration totalling 53 members.
