In the wake of post COVID-19 times, we know that the learning space is still recovering from the devastation of the limited classroom time that students experienced in 2021. Not being at school has not only resulted in a loss of learning for pupils, but also mental distress, exposure to violence and abuse, missed meals at school, and a reduction in social skills development. Ithala SOC Limited, a financial services provider, is still stepping into the fray to offer catch-up and revision lessons through the Ithala Edu Platform. This platform provides curriculum content and learner support to assist Grade 12 learners make up for any lost schooling and revision while helping them to prepare for their final exams.
The Ithala Edu Platform has enabled more than 491 466 students from underprivileged backgrounds to benefit from programmes focusing on the Caps Curriculum, Soft Skills and Career Guidance. More than 14 858 learners were interacting with tutors via WhatsApp enquiring about lessons from 2020 till date.
Ithala launched the Ithala Edu Platform in June 2020 and focused on subjects such as IsiZulu, English, Accounting, Mathematics, Geography, Physical science an Applied Computer Technologies. It started by delivering lessons on Facebook and zoom and early this year, we launched a website with an aim of hosting more lessons. You can access the website on https://myithala.education/ . The platform not only helps those who are everyday matriculant students in high schools, but those who are obtaining their matric qualification through other means as well.
With the release of matric results at the beginning of the year, many students have reported their grades have improved considerably because of the learning support. The Ithala Edu Platform is again up and running for the 2022 academic year and helping Grade 12 prepare for their final exams that are starting next week.
“I passed my matric last year with flying colours. The Ithala Edu Platform was very helpful to me and everything was clear, even if I couldn’t hear what the teacher says in the class, but Ithala Edu Platform was the best’ explains Siphamandla Thusi, who used the platform in 2021.
“I failed my matric 3 years ago and it’s only this year where I decided to finish my matric via an FET college, Edu Platform helped me a lot, I can’t even thank them enough for creating this platform. Things were difficult before I knew about Ithala because I work during the week, have school on Saturdays, am a mother as well as a wife, so thank you very much for this platform.” Says Nomandla Ntwesi from Eastern Cape.
“The hard reality is that South Africa cannot afford to lose another learner or another hour of learning time. Ithala continues to help communities who lack the means to improve their lives, especially in these difficult times of the pandemic, this year we want to ensure that students have recovered and are equipped to do their absolute best in the 2022 examination period”. Offering them career guidance and learner wellness forms part of ensuring that they enter the exam room with a clear mind and also know what to do with their lives post matric, Says Ithala CEO, Dr. Thulani Vilakazi.
Ithala wishes matriculants all the best during this year’s matriculation exams, and continues to support them and equip them as they chase their dreams.
